Standard formatting is intended for fiction and other primarily text-based books.
It can include simple design elements such as:
Custom chapter headings
Decorative scene breaks
Drop caps or styled opening paragraphs
Simple chapter-opening artwork
Basic interior ornaments
Text messages, letters, or similar occasional special text treatments
Simple images provided by the author
If your book contains extensive illustrations, complex tables, worksheets, recipes, footnotes, poetry with precise spatial requirements, unusual typography, or other design-heavy elements, tell me about it when you inquire.
Complex interiors may require a custom quote.
What You'll Need to Provide
Before formatting begins, your manuscript should be final and proofread.
You'll provide:
Your final manuscript
Preferably as a Microsoft Word or Google Docs document.
Trim size and print specifications
If you're booking print formatting.
Front matter
Copyright page, dedication, content notes, acknowledgments, etc.
Back matter
About the author, other books, newsletter information, reader magnet, review request, social links, etc.
Any graphics or ornaments you want included
Provided in appropriate quality/resolution and with the necessary rights for use.
Links
Website, newsletter, retailer links, social accounts, or other hyperlinks that should appear in the ebook.
And importantly:
You, the author, are responsible for ensuring you have the legal right to use all text, images, fonts, graphics, and other materials provided for inclusion in the book.
Depending on the service you select:
A finished EPUB file ready for upload to your chosen ebook distribution platform(s).
A finished print-ready PDF prepared to the specifications provided for your selected trim size and edition.
Both.
Simple. Don't promise source files unless you actually intend to give them source files.
Revisions
After receiving your formatted files, you'll have the opportunity to review them and request one round of reasonable formatting adjustments.
This can include things like:
adjusting an ornamental element
correcting a header
changing chapter-heading treatment
fixing a formatting issue
correcting minor author-supplied text errors discovered during review
It does not include substantial manuscript revisions after formatting has begun.
Please don't rewrite Chapter Twelve after I format your book.
Minor corrections happen—we've all found the world's most obvious typo immediately after declaring a manuscript final. But substantial additions, deletions, rewrites, or restructuring after formatting may require an additional fee.
Standard formatting does not include:
Editing or rewriting
Proofreading
Cover design
Cover resizing
ISBN purchase or registration
Copyright registration
Uploading/publishing the book on the author's behalf
Retailer account setup
Metadata creation
Distribution management
Ongoing file revisions after completion
Some of those could eventually become services.
Don't offer them accidentally because someone assumes “formatting” means “please publish my book for me.”
I don't believe every novel needs to look identical.
A contemporary romance might call for something clean and playful. A sprawling romantasy might deserve ornamental chapter openings. A darker book might need something quieter and more atmospheric.
I'll work with the aesthetic of your book while keeping readability and functionality at the center of the design.
The goal isn't to make your interior scream:
